When Is Star Wars Released on Disney Plus

'The Mandalorian,' Obi-Wan, and More: Every Star Wars Show Coming to Disney+

If you're celebrating May the Fourth, or if you're just randomly digging The Mandalorian and wishing that there was more Star Wars content on your TV every year, your wish is about to come true. Just like with their expanding lineup of Marvel super-shows, Disney+ has a bunch of Star Wars shows in various stages of production. Unfortunately none of them are The Adventures of Grogu Across the Galaxy, but maybe we can will it into existence through the Force.

Still, there's a lot of Star Wars content on the way, both animated and live-action. We're most likely getting more of The Mandalorian, potentially a Mando spinoff, and at least two more shows starring major Star Wars characters. Thank the maker, Obi-Wan's hermit years are finally coming to Disney+!

If you're having trouble following all the news and rumors about all of these different shows, then this list is for you. Here's everything you need to know about the small screen adventures of the galaxy's biggest franchise.

'The Book of Boba Fett'

Cast:Temuera Morrison (Boba Fett), Ming-Na Wen (Fennec Shand), Jennifer Beals

Premiere Date:December 29, 2021

Filming Dates: Filming began inNovember 2020 and lasted until June 2021.

Episode Count:TBA

Head Writer:TBA

Directors:Robert Rodriguez directed multiple episodes of the series. Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, and Bryce Dallas Howard also helmed an episode each.

Premise: The Book of Boba Fettwill take place in the timeline ofThe Mandalorian, following events seen in Season 2 last year. When last we saw Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison), he'd assumed the throne at Jabba's Palace with the assassin Fennec Shand by his side. As seen in the first trailer (below), it looks like the series will find Fett asserting himself as the leader of Tatooine's underworld.

Look Out For:Any stars fromThe Mandalorian, or even from any of the other new series.

'The Mandalorian' Season 3

The Mandalorian Cast:Pedro Pascal (Din Djarin/The Mandalorian), probably Grogu (gotta keep making those toys!), and then whoever else happens to pop up

The Mandalorian Premiere Date: With The Book of Boba Fett sliding into The Mandalorian's usual holiday release date, Season 3 is expected to premiere in 2022.

The Mandalorian Filming Dates: Season 3 began filming in October 2021.

The Mandalorian Episode Count:TBA, but presumably 8 like in previous seasons.

The Mandalorian Head Writer:Jon Favreau

The Mandalorian Directors:TBA, but it seems likely that Favreau, Dave Filoni, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Rick Famuyiwa will return.

The Mandalorian Premise:What started as a series about a lone gunslinger (Pascal) roaming the galaxy collecting bounties has turned into a galaxy-spanning search for a mysterious child's (Grogu!) home. That journey dropped Din Djarin into battle with monsters, spiders, and warlords. He also teamed up with other Mandalorians and even a former Jedi (Rosario Dawson's Ahsoka Tano).

Look Out For: The Mandalorian Season 2 exceeded all expectations and proved that this show knows how to handle large Star Wars mythology with intimate, character-driven storytelling. Expect more of that in Season 3—and hopefully more from Boba Fett, Ahsoka Tano, Bo-Katan Kryze, and maybe even Grand Admiral Thrawn.

'Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi'

STAR WARS: EPISODE III-REVENGE OF THE SITH, Ewan McGregor, 2005. Industrial Light & Magic/TM and ©co
Photo: Everett Collection

Cast:Ewan McGregor (Obi-Wan Kenobi), Hayden Christensen (Darth Vader), Joel Edgerton (Owen Lars), Bonnie Piesse (Beru Lars), Moses Ingram, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, O'Shea Jackson Jr., Sung Kang, Simone Kessell, Benny Safdie, Maya Erskine

Premiere Date:2022

Filming Dates: Filming began in May 2021 and wrapped in September.

Episode Count:6

Head Writer:Joby Harold (King Arthur: Legend of the Sword)

Director: Deborah Chow (The Mandalorian)

Premise:The series will be set roughly eight years after the events of Star Wars: Episode III—Revenge of the Sith. That means it's likely we'll get to see Kenobi in action on Tatooine, guarding the life of an eight-year-old Luke Skywalker from afar. But how does Darth Vader fit into this? We're promised there will be a rematch of the epic Anakin/Obi-Wan fight from RotS, but how that will work in continuity… Well, stay tuned.

Look Out For:If you loved all the Tusken Raider action in The Mandalorian's Season 2 premiere, you'll probably get a lot more of that in this series. Tatooine is also filled with plenty of familiar faces, from all the cantina aliens to the hangers-on at Jabba's palace.

'Star Wars: Andor'

ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY, Diego Luna, 2016. © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures / Lucasfilm
Photo: Everett Collection

Cast:Diego Luna (Cassian Andor), Genevieve O'Reilly (Mon Mothma), Forest Whitaker (Saw Gerrera), Stellan Skarsgard, Denise Gough, Kyle Soller, Adria Arjona, Fiona Shaw, Denise Gough, Robert Emms; Alan Tudyk was expected to reprise his role as Andor's robot sidekick K-2SO, but Tudyk's confirmed he won't be in the show (at least at first)

Premiere Date: TBD 2022

Filming Dates:Announced way back in November 2018, the Cassian Andor series was scheduled to begin filming in June 2020. That was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Production started to pick up again in August 2020, but details about filming are scarce.

Episode Count:12

Head Writer:Tony Gilroy (Rogue One); additional writers include Stephen Schiff (The Americans), Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler), and Beau Willimon (House of Cards); the series bible was written by Jared Bush (Moana, Zootopia)

Director: Toby Haynes (Utopia, Doctor Who)

Premise:This spy thriller, set five years before the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, will get into all the nitty gritty covert action of the early days of the Rebellion.

Look Out For:This show's setting places it right alongside the start of the animated series Star Wars Rebels. We've seen a number of characters make their live-action debuts in The Mandalorian, so is it possible that we'll see younger versions of them pop up in this series? Live-action Hondo, is all I'm saying!

'Star Wars: The Bad Batch'

UPDATE (8/5/21): Season 2 of The Bad Batch will premiere on Disney+ in 2022

Star Wars: The Bad Batch Cast:TBA, but it's almost a given that Dee Bradley Baker will continue to voice the clonetroopers

Star Wars: The Bad Batch Premiere Date:May 4, 2021

Star Wars: The Bad Batch Episode Count:14

Star Wars: The Bad Batch Head Writer:Jennifer Corbett (Star Wars Resistance, NCIS); Dave Filoni, Athena Portillo, and Carrie Beck are attached as producers

Star Wars: The Bad Batch Director:Brad Rau (Star Wars Resistance, Star Wars Rebels)

Star Wars: The Bad Batch Premise:Set after the events of the Clone Wars and the animated series of the same name, The Bad Batch will follow the titular squadron of badass clonetroopers as they travel the galaxy, taking on gigs as mercenaries.

Look Out For:Over the past decade, Star Wars' animated output has proven to be the most important piece of the entire canon. Characters and ideas from Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels have made their way into the feature films and The Mandalorian. It's likely that The Bad Batch will have a similar impact on the live-action stuff moving forward, so get on board early!

'Ahsoka'

Rosario as Ahsoka
Photo: Disney+

Cast:Rosario Dawson (Ahsoka Tano), Hayden Christensen (Anakin Skywalker)

Premiere Date:TBA

Filming Dates:Set to begin in early 2022

Episode Count:TBA

Head Writer:TBA

Directors:TBA

Premise:Not much is known aboutAhsoka. Rosario Dawson appeared in the episode "The Jedi" ofThe Mandalorian, and her live-action version of Ahsoka Tano is receiving her own standalone Star Warsseries. In her episode ofThe Mandalorian, former Jedi Ahsoka is able to communicate with The Child, even learning its real name: Grogu. Her new series could pick up where this episode left off — Ahsoka was hunting down Grand Admiral Thrawn. But it could also be something entirely different.

Look Out For: Grand Admiral Thrawn, but also some otherStar Wars: The Clone WarsandStar Wars Rebelscharacters. Sabine Wren and Ezra Bridger were also involved in Thrawn's plot, so we could see them in this live-action series as well.

'The Acolyte'

Star Wars- The Acolyte
Photo: Disney+

Cast:TBA

Premiere Date:TBA

Filming Dates:Filming begins in February 2022

Episode Count:8

Head Writer:Leslye Headland (Russian Doll)

Directors:TBA

Premise:So, clearly not much is known about this show. All Headland has said so far is that her series is set in a part of the Star Wars universe that we haven't seen much of before, as well as part of the timeline that hasn't been touched upon much. The series has also been teased as an "action thriller with martial arts elements." The mystery-thriller series will be led by a female character, guidingStar Warsfans through the untapped timeline of the High Republic era.

Look Out For: The Mandalorian brought new attention to the Old Republic era by mentioning the war between the Jedi and the Mandalorians. Maybe we'll see some of that? Really, we're grasping at space straws here!

'Lando'

Cast:TBA — there's been no mention of Donald Glover, who just reprised the role. Lando could be recast again, but it's unclear at the moment.

Premiere Date:TBA

Filming Dates:TBA

Episode Count:TBA

Head Writer:Justin Simien (Dear White People)

Directors:TBA

Premise:The premise of Justin Simien's series about Lando Calrissian has yet to be revealed, as he's still working in the early development stages on the project. It's also unclear whether this project will be live-action or animated. It could pick up whereSolo: A Star Wars Storyleft off — meaning, we'd find Lando Falcon-less and gambling via sabacc.

Look Out For: Well, certainly keep an eye out for either of the Landos we've already seen, be it Donald Glover or Billy Dee Williams. And Han Solo, of course! Anyone fromSoloseems pretty fair game withLando, so we could even get Phoebe Waller-Bridge as the fantastic L3-37 droid again.

'Star Wars: Rangers of the New Republic'

Rangers of the New Republic
Photo: Disney+

UPDATE: As of a report on May 20, 2021, Rangers of the new Republic is "not currently in active development"

Cast:TBA

Premiere Date:TBA

Filming Dates:TBA

Episode Count:TBA

Head Writer:TBA

Directors:TBA

Premise:Not a lot is known about this one either!Rangers of the New Republic will be set in the timeline ofThe Mandalorian, potentially culminating in a crossover between the original series and Ahsoka. Back in the Clone Wars, the Sector Rangers served as an intergalactic police force — could this new series be about them? We'll have to wait to see!

Look Out For: Any cast from The Mandaloriancould make an appearance since this is in the same timeline. Same goes for the newAhsokaseries.
